Hey there dear readers,
After a long break I am back on my blog and have a lot to tell. I had to quit writing for a while, because my doctor said that for the final healing period of my thumb, it is extremely important to not move or use it. Right now it is two day until the great "taking of the cast" ceremony, which will be celebrated by an extensive shower and the resigning to my gym. You may wonder why I am actually blogging, befor e my thumb is relaesed again, but as it is very quiet in the service I decided to do a one-handed blog to make use of my prescious work time.
To start chronologically one and a half weeks ago the Thai New Year or Songkran festival started all over the country. Chiang Mai is famous as the capital of celebration and the city was rushed by domestic and international party pilgrims. Our hotel started with a great, wet parade with water bombs, guns and a lot of fun. The maddest of all was Kun Tino, our nice hotel Manager, who jumped around and fired his water gun like crazy. I stayed out of the way, to keep my wounds and my cast dry. In the evening I went to the hospital the last time for letting my wounds be cleaned. They provided me water proof plasters, so I was able to shower and handle some water, without risking infections. As this did not work for my arm cast (which covers nearly my whoel lower right arm), I came up with the fabolous idea to put several plastic bags around it and tie them with rubber bands. So I was prepared for the whole spectacle and waited for my wednesday shift to end, because Kathrin arrived in Chiang Mai in the morning and I could not wait to see her. That evening we took the water party easy and concentrated on food and beverage. Kathrin and I went to the chiang mai mall first and enjoyed some wonderful sushi.
After grabbing some beers from the supermarket for us, Maxi and her friend Anna, who were waiting in town, we took at TukTuk to meet up.We had some drinks at the "mobile bar" with backpacking guys I met some weeks ago and went to bed in time. Next morning it was time to start celebrating Songkran ourselves. Kathrin already bought a huge water gun, so I looked for something of equal power. The first stand already offered exactly her model and I got it for less than 9 Euros :)
After meeting Maxi and Anna again we started our tour through city, all armed and in my case, armored with plastics and plasters. We went around Chiang Mai's hot spots for about 2 hours and what we experienced was simply unique. I always thought wet is wet, but believe me, that day we were REALLY WET (pictures)! It is great fun, but constantly heating you form the inside (the fun is much bigger, if you put ice cubes in the water) is exhausting and around lunch time we felt like finishing a marathon already. Some warm meal and coffee brought us back to life and we reloaded the guns and marched around the more quite parts to see some of the city.
I had to work on friday again, so we only had dinner and went to bed pretty early. After my shift on friday I moved to Kathrins guest house, a beautiful and tranquile place in a perfect spot for Songkran and we joined the two other girls for dinner. Getting up early the next day we left in time again, but the mosquitos kept me awake for some time.
Shower, breakfast and off to Lampang elefant center was the command for next morning. arriving after a one-hour bus ride, we arrived at the place and queued up for the hilariously low entrance fee.
The afternoon was breath taking. After a painting and exercise show, which I found so-so we fed and pet the elefants and went to the place where their mahouds bath and clean them. The scenery was so nice (pictures) and full of joy that I forgot to take pictures, which Kathrin did extensively. lucky me! later on I recognized that I did not recharge it anyways. From the bath we went straight to the hospital, where injured elephants are operated and observed during their recovering. Afterwards we went to the nursery where we played with a mother and his new born child. (Pictures)
Without any clue how to get back to Chiang Mai, we stood aside the highway and just yelled and waved at every passing bus. It took as 10 minutes to stop a big, luxurious travel bus which took us back for even less than the regular fares:)
Back in town we took the next bus and went up to Doi Suteb, because the girls wanted to see it as well (pictures). After a shower in the guest house and a little rest Kathrin and I went to another part of Chiang Mai because I wanted to show her a special restaurant where they only cook with Mango, one of our favorite fruits. One hour and a kilo gramm of rice, ice Mango, Mango and Mango later we rolled out of the property and headed to the river to meet the others in my favorite bar. We had bad luck and there we no good bands, so we left for another place and joined my girls from Service Center.
Around midnight we said good bye to Maxi and Anna who had to leave for Bangkok early the next morning. Some minutes later Bommel and I went home as well, planning to see the tigers the following day. I was so hungry that I ate a croissant, a sandwich and a bruger on the way back!
On sunday we stayed in bed long and relaxed after those fully packed days. After Muesli and coffee brunch we carried Kathrins bags to my hotel and looked for a ride to Tiger Kingdom. The first TukTuk guy I asked came directly from the company and drove us forth and back for less than 50% of the normal price. Prior to arrival Kathrin always said she s not going to stay with the big cats, but I convinced her on the last second. Ten minutes later we stood in front of the cage and I was not sure anymore if I had done a good thing. She was very scared, but bravely handled the animals and we had a great time (pictures). Afterwards we went to the small tigers as well and enjoyed some great moments with less fear. It was a wonderful weekend and I am already looking forward to experiencing Cambodia and its famous tempel next week. You will hear from me :)
post you later
